In the aftermath of the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has granted full operational freedom to the armed forces to respond decisively, top government sources said on Tuesday.
The Prime Minister was briefed late Monday night by senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Indian Army, and intelligence agencies following the attack, which claimed the lives of seven security personnel and left over a dozen injured. The assailants targeted a convoy of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) near the tourist-heavy region of Pahalgam, using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and automatic weapons in a coordinated ambush.
According to sources, PM Modi expressed deep anguish over the loss of lives and conveyed that the perpetrators of the attack would be “given a befitting response.” He was also quoted as instructing the top brass that the forces must not be constrained by procedural delays or political considerations in carrying out counter-terror operations.
“The Prime Minister has made it clear that the armed forces and security agencies have full freedom to act as they see fit to neutralize those behind the attack,” a senior official told reporters on condition of anonymity.
In addition to operational freedom, the Prime Minister has reportedly called for accelerated coordination between intelligence agencies and ground forces to dismantle terror networks in South Kashmir, where infiltration and militant activity have seen a resurgence in recent months.
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi are believed to be personally monitoring the situation, and the Prime Minister may chair a high-level security review meeting in the coming days.
